The Tale of Nezha — Thoughts on Watching "Ne Zha: Birth of the Demon Child"

I was born immortal

Fate plays tricks on people

Heaven and earth turned upside down

Reborn as a demon

My heart was a child’s

Yet the crowd

Sees me as a monster

Hurls abuse at me

Cannot tell right from wrong

I am strong, I am able

I could have benefited others

But these living beings

Are foolish and dull

Eyes that cannot see

Ears that cannot hear

Cannot tell black from white

You call me a demon

So I will be a demon

I will toy with you all

Watch you grieve

Watch you howl

Pitiful, hateful

Look at these beings

Stirring up trouble out of nothing

Thinking themselves extraordinary

Look at these beings

Help them out of the sea of suffering

As if scheming for their wealth

You call me a demon

So I will be a demon

Tearing the tiles off the roof

Wreaking havoc on the world

That wailing of yours

You truly deserve it

No good to any living being

I am the most free

Spit at me, curse me

A faint smile

Heartless and carefree

I don’t care

Who cares about whom

Saying I don’t care

I care deeply

Deep in the night, all quiet

All alone

I only pity that

Pure heart of a child

I want to be close to people

I want to be near people

Helping each other

Keeping each other company

To have a friend

Kicking a shuttlecock together

The gears turn day by day

Time changes day by day

The beings of that day

Fall into disaster

Because of me

The demon nature is natural

It is destined

The heavenly tribulation cannot be avoided

My parents do not reject me

They see me as human

Love me as their child

Willing to trade their own lives

For my safety

Never telling the truth

A well-meaning lie

I do not accept my fate

The words of fools

What are they to me

All nonsense

To hell with that absurd fate

My fate is up to me

Not up to heaven

Since I have a human body

Then I am human

Not a demon but an immortal

Subduing demons and vanquishing evil

Bringing blessings to the world
